Term 3
TE REO
What an exciting learning journey we are having learning more and new kupu as we try very hard to use more Te Reo Māori in our day. We start the day with the roll and greetings in Te Reo. We comment on how we're feeling, what day it is and what the weather is like. Many students have embraced this learning and are becoming quite fluent in pronunciation and recall of relevant words. Miharo! We have worked with our buddy class and supported the younger students with their new kupu.
CURRICULUM
Reading: We are reading for fluency and comprehension. Students are learning to find information in a text, infer hidden meaning and reorganise the information they have read. This comes in the form of reading units based on our area of interest, which this term is NZ history.
Writing: Explanation and persuasion. These go hand in hand this term as students explain why some things happen and persuade us to change our minds or try new things. The writing is on the wall in our classroom and anyone is welcome to come and have a read.
Maths: Maths No Problem continues to drive our programme hand in hand with the NZ curriculum. We have just started book B in both year groups and are working hard to learn the new concepts taught.
Term 2
SPORT
Most students in Room 2 are involved in the inter-school sport exchange. The codes are rugby, soccer, hockey and netball. Credit goes to any student who has stepped outside of their comfort zone and is trying a new sport this year.
CURRICULUM
Reading: This term we are learning about various aspects of safety, followed by an investigation into the wonderful world of insects. The reading we do will be based around this to support learning and comprehension.
Writing: The above topics lend themselves very well to information reports, so the challenge is to make these interesting and engaging while staying true to the correct format.
Maths: Using Maths No Problem has been an awesome learning journey for both the students and teacher! We are gradually getting used to the way the lessons flow and how to make the most of the learning on offer. This term both Year 5's and 6's will be working on multiplication and division, graphing and fractions.
Term 1
SWIMMING
This term we will swim as much as we can in our school pool, learning all of those fundamental water safety skills which will help us to save ourselves if ever we got into difficulty in a pool, river or the sea. Students are also taught the correct way to do the different strokes and kicks and given lots of opportunities to practice. We also have lessons at the Aquatic Centre to refine our techniques.
CURRICULUM
Reading: One hour of reading every day will see students learning about and practicing the skills and strategies needed to be come students who read to learn.
Writing: Term 1 usually has students writing about themselves and their summer holidays.
Maths: This presents a great opportunity to learn more about measurement and dive into addition and subtraction strategies. We also start exploring a new maths resource called Maths No Problem.
Art: There is always great excitement because we love learning more about this and showcasing our awesome talents. This year we are learning about surrealist self portraits and Cubism (Picasso and Dali). We will be doing some sculpture and adapting Hokusai's Great Wave picture to have a Taranaki influence which reflects our whenua and pepeha.
PE
We will be making the most of the great summer weather to learn new games to play throughout the year, practicing the various active game skills that students will be taught, like keeping cool in stressful game situations and being a fair team player.
